1Xtra’s Mistajam tells the story of Labrinth, the artist, producer and multi-instrumentalist.

You may know him as the man behind Tinie Tempah’s ‘Pass Out’ or perhaps you first of heard him when ‘Earthquake’ hit the scene? But did you know that music runs deep in his family? Or that he sees colours when he writes music? 

Mistajam heads to the rising star’s restaurant in Wood Green to discover the ingredients that transformed Hackney teenager Timothy McKenzie into super-producer Labrinth.

Labrinth comes from a large, musically talented family. His brother plays drums for Tinie Tempah and his sisters provide vocal sessions for Terri Walker & Wretch 32. But what was it like growing up in the McKenzie household?

Drink less caffeine?

This post is being fired at you from the sleep-weary eyes of a (hopefully temporary) insomnia-driven young women, who has been postponing most forms of productivity in favour of undertaking ‘festive’ activities, whilst scrounging for money in the month-long build up to Christmas & the New Year.

Once again, a new year brings with it a new job. Such is the nature of a radio career, where self-employment begins from the off and staff roles come much, much, much later in life. Amongst the excitement is great apprehension; the usual nerves have been bubbling under as the suspense of a month’s wait gradually draws to a close. Perhaps it’s the thought of going home for Christmas, not working, relaxing and present-giving that’s keeping me up all night, perhaps it’s all the ideas for the new job, it’s probably both – either way it’s looking like a good few weeks lie ahead.

The new role in question is that of Radio Station Assistant Manager at Roundhouse Radio, based in Chalk Farm (near Camden). Since joining the Roundhouse Studios as a writer for Redtop Magazine and producing podcast content for the Camden Crawl, not to mention the small task of creating a monthly Arts and Culture show; Redtop radio – the day-to-day running of the station plus a whole host of creative projects looks set to keep me on work overload for the next 6 months.

I’d almost forgotten what it was like to be in control of a personal daily schedule and initiating projects (while getting paid to do so!) Since I (finally) left Solent in 2009, I’ve been craving the luxury of arranging my own meetings, conjuring up vast plans and hoping that someone will approve/reassure me that they might be worth pursuing…and then going ahead with them regardless.

The main aim however is to get just one, big project completed by the end of the 6 month-stint. I have a tonne of ideas, but one overall goal must be achieved, else the day-to-day tasks will overrule and all I’ll be left with is a CV addition, and a heavy heart that longs to turn back the clock.

Speaking of clocks, I’ve just glanced at mine and it’s horrendously late. Must.Switch.Off. Wish me luck…?

Redtop Radio – The Birth

It’s up, at last!

After a manic few months of trying to make ends meet, while sporadic protests broke out across the capital myself and the Redtop radio team have built our first feature-length Arts and Culture Show, (for da yoot, innit).

Here you’ll also find our special riot reports, from the perspective of real, young London residents, artists and campaigners.

Our reporters have been busy not just scurrying around the streets of the big smoke, but also curiously discovering new sights at Glastonbury, Bestival and Lee Fest.

Also on the show, we feature local Love Music, Hate Racism event – Castlehaven Festival, Ron Arad’s Curtain Call Event and find out if Underage Festival really is ‘all that’.

And…(yes, I started a sentence with and, what of it?) as a special gift to our fellow curiosity kittens out there, we have also post a Poetry Slam special and a documentary on the NYC Downlow, another insight from this summer’s Glastonbury Festival.

Protest Music: an Interview with Josh White

Josh White, also known as ‘So Be Fire’, wrote the track “We Will March” in the lead up to the largest student demonstration in over 20 years. The track accompanied a video created by QMTV at Queen Mary Students’ Union to promote the march on November 10th 2010. This may be his first ‘official’ protest song, but political elements were already beginning to surface in his solo work.

When did you first begin writing your own music?

I started as soon as I started playing the guitar, I think – around 13 or 14. I wrote my first song  with a friend aged 14 (it was rubbish) and I still have some of those early songs in my set.

What inspired you to start writing music?

I suppose I’m one of the last of a generation of people writing music before social media, or at least when it was in its infancy. Myspace (and the like) helped young bands an enormous amount in the early/middle 2000s, but I already had the songwriting bug before then and that sort of DIY-led exposure just made it even more exciting (especially when you are young and have no money for professional studios). I didn’t have the strong musical upbringing that a lot of musicians have – that music education is still coming. I’m hopelessly in love with bands like The Ramones precisely because I’m coming to them so late. My initial inspiration was probably just that I could play the guitar and create music if I wanted to. It was a pretty self-perpetuating idea that became more fun the more I learned to play. I definitely didn’t consciously decide to start writing music. It was pretty organic, I think.

Do you think that in the era of social media that it’s harder or easier for musicians to get their message across?

It’s really hard to say. While it has definitely revolutionised the way a lot of people discover new music, it has also become a little saturated. The way musicians create and sell their music now is the result of a much wider set of reasons, like the low(ish) cost of recording gear, the renaissance of live music, and so on. Social media has had an enormous impact, but I’m not convinced bands find it any easier to get their music to people. If anything, because of the sheer amount of music it means bands maybe have to be more original (or good-looking) to attract fans, which may or may not actually make the general quality of music better. At the very least, you have to be doing something interesting – and social media hasn’t changed that at all.

Would you categorise any of your songs as a form of protest music?

Yes, I suppose so. The song for the QMTV video (‘We WIll March’) is the most overtly political song I have, though I definitely bring protest and politics into other songs. It’s important that music has political elements, if only as a means of expression for the musician writing it.

How did you get involved with the video for QMTV? Did you write the song before the video was created?

Sam Creighton (VP Media and Communications at QMSU) asked me to write something for a video about the cuts and I had a couple of song ideas I was working on that just fit really well with the folk-punk, anthemic vibe we were looking for. In fact, Sam and Caz Parra (also of QMedia) wrote the lyrics with me in about two hours, in a mangy, damp room and they actually came out pretty well!

Has your time at University had any major influence on your song writing?

Yes, definitely. Musically, Queen Mary is a dead space. There is no scene, no live music and everyone who likes alternative music tends to head into town. There are some really talented people here, but there’s no culture of music. As such, it pretty much solidified me as a solo artist (it’s hard enough finding anyone who can play an instrument, let alone likes the same music enough to jam or start bands with) and since then I’ve always worked my music within the parameters of a vocal and an acoustic guitar. Lyrically, I studied Law for two years before moving to History and that completely changed the way I think and write about everything and my music has been much more political since then. Law students really are ghastly…

What are your views on the prospective cuts and the rise in tuition fees? What do you feel students can/should do next?

Who the hell knows? It feels like more than an argument over cuts – like it’s a generational issue, like the youth are finally waking up after thirty years of inactivity. Whether it will just affect the future of the Left or youth politics, nobody knows. Whether it actually is a crisis of generational conflict isn’t clear either. We still aren’t out of that ahistorical, post-war tradition of thinking everything is soon going to turn to shit. It could be nothing. But it certainly feels different. The fees: £9000 is a ludicrous amount to pay for education, but it might not actually dissuade young people. The wider problems are that our society (not just the government, the media are culpable too, as are a lot of inordinately stupid members of the electorate) seems to be saying that arts and humanities subjects have no value over and unless they give a direct economic contribution to the country. That famous Thatcher episode of saying Ancient Norse was a ‘luxury’ is a view that many people share, and it’s utterly wrong. That we should seek to enrich ourselves as individuals and as a society through cultural awareness is one of the most profound things we can ever hope to do. To say it is a ‘luxury’ unless it has an immediate professional, cash value that leads to a career is short-sighted, offensive and historically bankrupt. In times of austerity, the public don’t like to see the government backing degrees in Fine Art or French Poetry, but they are as important as Finance, Law or Engineering. The problem for students is that less than 2% went on the National Demo in November. As much as the wider public don’t care, we still haven’t convinced our own that it’s a fight worth turning up for. That’s why we’ll lose.

Were you involved with/did you attend any of the protests?

I attended the first, the National Demo in November with all the madness at Millbank (though I  wasn’t in that part of the march). I have no intention of attending any more. Protesting in that way is worthless. It doesn’t gain support for students from the electorate who, in times like these, have their own problems. It doesn’t, short of massive numbers, persuade the Coalition to change their minds. And worst, with a violent minority hijacking peaceful demos, it’s like shooting fish in a barrel for the press who can tarnish all students with the brush that has labelled our generation – the ASBO generation – as the feckless, undeserving inheritors of this country. The argument needs to be won elsewhere and the violence is just making us all look like idiots.

Do you think there is/should be an upsurge in protest music/art given the ‘current economic climate’?

I think there will be, but protest music has always existed in times of affluence too. There may be a deeper sense of injustice felt by more people and this may mean protest songs have more resonance. But music can definitely inspire people to change their minds and we should all hope it continues to do so.

Living in the free(lance) world

I thought it best I update this ‘ere blog and provide any on-lookers a bit of context to my previous ‘status update’ post. It was not meant as a form of bragging, but ‘this is what I’m currently up to’ and an appeal for help – I am in need of further work to keep myself alive (physically, mentally and creatively).

The Guardian Careers Blog recently published an exciting (or at least, reassuring) article entitled: Graduate job seeking: The rise of the ‘slasher’.

In spite of the unfortunate wording I am proud to say that I myself am a slasher. It’s not a new concept – far from it, but perhaps it’s one that will become much more widely recognised, accepted and hopefully praised in the near future given the increasingly tumultuous job market.

The phrase ‘slasher’ is simple. It is someone who works in various different fields, i.e. a journalist/web developer/lecturer or as mentioned in the article pharmacist/writer/lawyer….the list is endless and full of opportunity.

This is something that excites me because when I underwent my placement at BBC Radio 1 back in 2009 I did so with the intention of becoming a Music Journalist/Reporter and instead came out with knowledge of the roles of Producers/Journalists/Executive Producers/Editors/Documentary Makers/Broadcast(Unit) Assistants/Web Developers…all sorts and despite my excitement of having such insight (plus the opportunity to rule out those I was uninterested in) I was given these words of advice within my exit interview, “narrow your focus”.

Narrowing my focus has since been my aim but with very little success. I have been living in constant fear that my skills and work experience will appear too broad to employers and I will seem indecisive. I’ll admit I have been very much undecided in the past but I honestly don’t believe that should be seen as a negative attribute, as long as you have drive and the willingness to be dedicated to whichever job you take on.

I once interviewed Hardeep Singh (of The One Show fame, among other things) – he told me in a rather blunt manner that people shouldn’t be pigeon-holed and nor should they be put off doing a variety of roles; “why should anyone have to be just one thing?” he stated in a firm, almost abrupt manner. Regardless of your perception of Singh, his words resonated with me. Rarely do people know exactly what they want to do in life, let alone have the confidence and opportunity to make that job happen.

I now have a much clearer idea of the type of work I want to be involved with now due to the very fact that I have experimented with events, broadcasting, writing, PR and so on. I understand that it is going to take some time to get there; along the way I will have to pick up odd jobs and simply apply the same enthusiasm regardless, as that is just the way the world is – we need money to survive and people to put in hard work to what others see as menial jobs.

I wish everyone was forced to work in an admin or labour-intensive job before embarking on their careers so that they could share the same perspective, then perhaps they’d appreciate how hard it is to ensure an organisation functions successfully and fully appreciate that no one in this world is superior to another (this is not meant to sound pro-communism, it’s just common sense).

And on that note I’m off to write an article, then a radio script, look into the likelihood of securing arts funding and re-shaping my CV for part-time work to pay the bills….it’s going to be a long night, but for once in my life I’m feeling pretty positive about it.

Worked as an Events Assistant to coordinate the BBC Introducing Musicians’ Masterclass at Abbey Road and Maida Vale Studios – liaising with BBC regional radio producers and 250 delegates from across the UK.

Assisted the live broadcast of BBC Radio 1/1Xtra’s The Surgery at Longley Sixth Form College in Sheffield.

I have two shifts lined up shadowing Unit Assistants at BBC Radio 1

I will be presenting a one-off show on Arts Cuts as part of the Red Top Magazine team at the Roundhouse in Camden, live on Roundhouse Radio.

Finding a full-time job…(I think freelancing is more likely!)

ROAM

As we have just stumbled into a new year, it’s inevitable that a large proportion of the population – and the media – will begin reflecting on the last one; evaluating what went wrong, what went well, and of course picking out the all important ‘highlights’.

Since I’m trying my best not to have any regrets these days – and my positive encounters are already posted within this blog for anyone who cares to read about them – I won’t delve into a full-blown analysis of the past 12 months, but rather pick out a project that I only briefly had a connection with during 2010, highlighting it to you, my fond reader, in hope that I may re-encounter this project in 2011 in a much greater capacity.

Roam:

“What is Roam? Well, picture a mobile village green preservation society, wending its way across London’s five host boroughs for London 2012, stopping off to lead foraging walks or geology talks. Think of it as a very British version of Ken Kesey’s magic bus – a TARDIS on wheels – an old library van filled with ephemera, flora and fauna collected from the markets and charity shops it pulls up outside.”

When I encountered Roam – after stumbling across their website via Arts Jobs & signing up as a volunteer – they’d parked up outside the Mile End Art Pavillion in East London on July 17th.

The schedule for the day was simple – attract a local audience and entice them into exploring both the arts and nature; through screen-printing workshops and ecology walks.

Unfortunately, it was a quiet Saturday – I believe many of the local creative types had fled the area to avoid the monster that is Victoria Park’s ‘LoveBoxx Weekender’, which was annoyingly taking place down the road, attracting a glorious array of booze-fueled, TopShop-clad festival goers.

However, away from the hustle and bustle of the main road, ROAM was appreciating a more relaxed atmosphere and in spite of the small numbers, the screen prints that were created were beautiful. I had a go myself, drawing around leaves & pine cones and cutting out shapes that somewhat resembled flowers.

What I adored the most though (after taking the time to walk along the river in the heat handing out flyers & smiling at tourists attempting to steer their rented gondolas), was taking the time to sit in the miniature van and reading the many second-hand books, poems and pamphlets they had accumulated, wishing that I could drive off into the sunset and travel the world with a bus load of literature at my disposal…

My time with Roam was short, but the premise was inspiring.

Here’s hoping it returns this summer.

Red Top Magazine – Camden Roundhouse

My newest creative outlet comes in the form of an online magazine called Red Top – created by young people at the Roundhouse in Camden.

The publication – released twice a year – used to be produced in print form, however, it will now be transforming into a brand new website.

Multimedia Journalism

Focusing on online and radio journalism, each Wednesday evening the team meet to expand our writing and broadcasting styles; so far we’ve been learning how to research features and will hopefully be producing simple audio and video packages to upload to the site in time for it’s grand launch.

Interviewing the original women from Made in Dagenham

To encourage people from around the UK to get involved with the UCU and The National Union of Students demonstration against cuts to education, myself and my colleague Lisa Pool interviewed four of the women who went on strike in 1968, at Ford Dagenham. Their actions consequently led to the introduction of the Equal Pay Act in 1970.

They did it – so can we. Fight for what you believe in.
